The girl who organised the previous Ninja Village trip was searching in vain for a sex museum. I found it in Beppu instead, so decided to take a few snaps for her sake.
Jigoku Meguri, or burning hell. This is the name given to the springs. I visited 8 The first hell - Umi-Jigoku Eggs are boiled in this basket The first hell - Umi-Jigoku The first hell - Umi-Jigoku The eggs were heated in the spring, only milk and sugar were added to make this desert. Some gates leading to a small shrine. Some gates leading to a small shrine. A brown pool, still in the first Apparently these things grow so large that kids can walk on them. Since it was early in the season, they were just growing in a nursery I think they meant to say View leaving or entering the first hell. Spring can be seen in the distance This type of thing seems to be popular with the Japanese - at major places they have one of these sign boards with the date on it. The idea is that you get yourself photographed with the signboard. They even had a girl walking up and down on the shinkansen with a board with a picture of the train on it and the date. Hot mud bubbling at the second hell - Oniishibozu-jigoku. Named after shaved monks' heads - the appearance given by the bubbling mud. Big pile of hot rocks with smelly steam coming out below them Oniishibozu-jigoku (2) Big pile of hot rocks with smelly steam coming out below them. Steaming hot water can be seen gushing forth from this one. Yama-jigoku (3) This spring supported a whole lot of animals in a kind of zoo. The hot spring water provides a tropical habitat for them. Hungry hungry hippo... Sure there might be a hot spring to keep this elephant warm, but I did think the enclosure could have been a lot bigger! Lamas This demon character is supposed to guard the spring... Hell number 4 - Kamado-Jigoku This demon character is supposed to guard the spring... Kamado-Jigoku (4) Pool of heated water. Hell number 5 - Oniyama-Jigoku. This sign explains that the spring makes it a suitable location for breeding crocodiles. How lucky! I bet someone was searching all over Japan for a way to breed crocodiles, and they found the solution here! Oniyama-Jigoku (5). I didn't find the object mentioned in the sign Yes they were indeed breeding crocodiles at this spring. Yes they were indeed breeding crocodiles at this spring. Hell number 6 - Shiraike-Jigoku.
