Kagoshima
Day trip to the southern tip of Kyushu, the town of Kagoshima

The inside of a Shinkasen high speed train. Note the amount of leg room - more than enough for my long legs! The inside of a Shinkasen high speed train. Note the amount of leg room - more than enough for my long legs! And of course, all facilities are available on the shinkansen, if you can't wait for the frequent trolley service just use the vending machine. Other facilities include payphones and spacious bathrooms. Arrived at Kagoshima station The front(or back) of a Tsubame (swallow) Shinkansen train. This was some sort of horse-type thing. When you push the button it jumps up and down, jingling lots of bells in the process The beauty box seemed to be a place for Japanese girls just to do their makeup. A good idea I suppose, it might save them from doing it on the train... There were two choices when riding this ferris wheel - wait 30 minutes in a big queue for the clear carriage (visible in this picture) or board immediately for all the other normal ones. I didn't really think there was much difference to be honest... Here you can see the queue of people waiting for the clear carriage View of two of the Tsubame Shinkansen waiting at Kagoshima station View of two of the Tsubame Shinkansen waiting at Kagoshima station View over the city with the volcano, Mt. Ondake visible in the background. View over the city. View over the city with the volcano, Mt. Ondake visible in the background. View over the city This didn't appear to be whale, all of the dishes were named with funny names... I don't know what this was banging on about, but it started with The bus which drove around behind the vehicle which made all the noise Many japanese women carry around umbrellas and wear long sleeves, even in cloudy weather. What a contrast to the Swiss who even try to tan their eyelids by looking into the sun with closed eyes... This truck was playing a very inane tune and blasting advertisements for the opening of a pet store from a loudspeaker. Note the specific breeds and prices plastered all over the front. Statue of Saigo Takamori - a very influential figure in the history of both the region and Japan. Chuo Park Chuo Park Chuo Park Chuo Park Chuo Park It seems even the boyfriend is trying to shelter from the sun. Despite a fear of the sun, nobody seems to have thought about wearing sun glasses... If you want to park a lot of cars in a very small space, just make a massive tower like this. The cars are deposited onto pallets and recalled to the entrance when the owner arrives. No need for driving around to park your car, just drive it into the entrance and the conveyer system takes care of the rest. Down at the waterfront - Down at the waterfront - Down at the waterfront - This blue building seemed to contrast quite a bit with its surroundings Petrol station attendants waving flags at passing traffic in the hope that they might suddenly change their mind about filling up. Another one of these massive vertical parking stations. You can see the entry/exit points. In front of each is a giant disc which rotates the cars. This was the entrance to a I didn't go to the 2nd floor to find out Many Japanese dogs, despite the warm weather, are dressed in clothes. Statue of Shimazu Nariakira A stone bridge through some gardens. Golf is very popular in Japan. This massive driving range was pretty much right next to a shrine. Golf is very popular in Japan. Another old meets new contrast. The pet store I saw earlier - look closely at the animals. Not only are they sometimes dressed up or wearing spectacles, but they seemed to have confused a chinchilla for a cat... The giant ferris-wheel above the Amu center. The Shinkansen arrives at the station.
