Tokyo
After the travels across Japan I spent one week in Tokyo. My Japanese teacher Keigo was visiting Tokyo so we spent some time together.

A shopping center in Yokohama View of the giant ferris wheel at Yokohama, unfortunately there was a lot of rain, so I didn't take many photos Interesting sculpture in Yokohama These are long sleeve glove things for the arms. They are designed for Japanese women who want to completely avoid the sun (in addition to the umbrella they always carry) There were a lot of these jelly type packs. They are designed to fill you up a little while giving you nothing but vitamins. I tried one, and it did fill me up a little. Rock melons and sugar melons are a luxury item. These were around 13 Euros. This melon was even more expensive, approximately 25 Euros. Want to make Sushi for dinner - no problem, just buy this sashimi for approximately five Euros, just add rice and you are set. The sticker tells us that it was prepared at 17:00, so only an hour or so old. If you don't want to make the rice, how about a huge selection of fresh sushi for 13 Euros? Yakitori - each skewer around EUR0.60 This is typical of the amount of choice offered in Japan. Just how many toy machines does a child have to choose from? 2,3 or maybe 5? Perhaps an entire wall full? This was a video game where children sit around the outside and try to snare various fish, stingrays, etc. Their catch is measured in kilos. Probably not the best way to teach children about marine stewardship. The machine featured actual shells - unfortunately sending the message that it's ok to take shell for sovenier purposes. Probably the most alarming aspect of this childrens game is that it spat tokens back out according to performance - thereby adding the element of possible monetary gain - i.e. gambling. These furry animals seemed to be very popular. This is an entire section dedicated to giant beetles and products to care for them. Putting fruit into sandwiches seems to be popular... Putting fruit into sandwiches seems to be popular... I think they meant rubbish or trash... Many shopping centers have these huge cooking schools. There are many classes running all the time and they seem to be very well equipped. Visting and excellent restaurant near the base of Tokyo Tower Inside the garden of Tokyo Shiba Tofuya Ukai - a famous restaurant in the heart of Tokyo Keigo-san and Fumeo-san before the meal Me before the meal View from our private tatami room First course - Yam Tofu Our menu - nine courses Second course - Deep fried tofu with sweet miso source and egg custard Our menu with English translations Third course - assorted sashimi Fourth course - Gourd with finely crumbled shrimp soup. It was like a big root - very tasty. Fifth course - butterbur dressed with miso, boiled tender octopus, simmered Ukai beef with ginger, reduced sweet potato. Fifth course - butterbur dressed with miso, boiled tender octopus, simmered Ukai beef with ginger, reduced sweet potato. I thought this was the next course - it turned out to be the charcoal to heat the pot for the next course. This is the pot which held our next course - Ben soup with Tofu Sixth course - Ben soup with Tofu - delicious! Seventh course - Deep fried sweet fish and shrimp tempura cake Eighth course - boiled rice with hijiki seaweed The ninth and final course - Plum and gelatin in sugar syrup When I stood up after the meal I almost touched the roof... Walking around in the gardens after the meal. The small building in the center is the kitchen. Koi are a standard feature of most gardens The entrance area to the restaurant One of the dining rooms A display of various items in the entrance hall A display of various items in the entrance hall Entrance area to the restaurant More dining rooms in the section close to the entrance. Leaving the restaurant The tower is visible from the gardens of the restaurant The tower is visible from the gardens of the restaurant Fumio-san and Keigo-san outside the restaurants. We all felt very full at this point. Thanks go to Fumio-san for an excellent experience! A giant spider scultpture outside the Ropongi Hills building. The restaurant where we ate earlier is the green area on the right. An intersection of the freeways which are built above street-level This large green area is actually a graveyard right in the middle of Tokyo This is melon-man. The bit on the top of his head is a vine Foxes are considered very holy. Japanese graveyard Japanese graveyard Dinner with Keigo - enjoying Sukiyaki just before we were shaken around by an earthquake. The true Japanese experience was then complete! Giant bear and smaller bears in bed. Seems to be a normal way of advertising a restaurant An extremely tiny keyboard. I had to buy it. Walking the streets of Akihabara A really fancy arcade game. We played this one, but I didn't find it that exciting to be honest. I think the food pocket was a food court... Maids from the many Figurines of the various manga characters were all over Akihabara Figurines of the various manga characters were all over Akihabara Apparently this is a book to teach vocabulary in English using manga. Well I guess we know what the first word is... Just an example of one of the many posters I saw. Also quite typical - girls that look like they aren't old enough to have breasts, but seem to be impossibly well-endowed anyway. The famous Docomo dake (mushroom). Interestingly, the mushrooms were secured with security cords, just as the phones were. A strange arcade-style market in Akihabara - each stall sold only small electronic components. A strange arcade-style market in Akihabara - each stall sold only small electronic components. Even here in this strange electronics component market, Hello Kitty makes an appearance. Noise is a constant feature in Japan. In this large department store yelling at passing customers is not enough - a megaphone is used. This was an absolutely massive electronics store, the likes of which I've never seen. This is half an aisle of perhaps 30 aisles on this floor (9 floors). This aisle was just for products to clean your computer. Two whole sections are dedicated to different brands of compressed air spray (used for cleaning computers)
